Pumpkin Themed Art for all Grades

October is a fun month for students.  Leaves are changing, the weather is getting cooler and Halloween is in sight!  I bought pumpkins and gourds of various sizes and shapes for students to draw.  They loved having these real life still life objects to hold, smell and explore.  Each project was geared towards the specific grade level to meet students needs and teach new art concepts and skills.

6th Grade Warm/Cool Pumpkins
Students reviewed past knowledge of warm and cool colors for this assignment and we discussed how color affects the time of day.  Students learned how to draw a pumpkin of separate segments instead of drawing a circle and adding vertical lines.

7th Grade Line Pumpkin Still Life
For this assignment, students used only lines to illustrate the pumpkins, ground and sky showing depth and form.  Overlapping oil pastels on black construction paper created a realistic nighttime scene.

8th Grade Pumpkins Drawn 4 Ways
Students demonstrated their knowledge of drawing techniques by rendering pumpkins using hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and blending.
